Why we’re striking for Gaza – and how you can too

Last week, the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory joined the growing body of experts declaring that Israel has committed genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.

As we go about our day to work connecting advocates for economic systems change around the world, this unimaginable suffering, and the world’s complicity in it, is never far from our hearts, and conversations.

When a new campaign appeared harnessing our collective power over economic systems to help put an end to the genocide we knew we had to sign up.

The Global Strike for Palestine is a weekly action set in motion by the Humanti Project, happening every Thursday since late August. As they put it, “The aim is to create visible, measurable disruption by collectively withdrawing our spending power, hitting the only thing capitalist states and corporations truly value: their economies.”

Humanti’s Global Strike aims to force governments and corporations to pay attention by disrupting financial flows and consumption patterns. We are all part of shaping the economy – how and where we spend and move our money matters. And it is tracked by governments and companies. By withdrawing our spending power together, we can create a disruption that is visible and measurable.

As a small charity with a flat structure, and a moral and legal mandate to improve the conditions of life in socially and economically disadvantaged communities it is relatively straightforward for WEAll as an organisation to get involved. We want to support this call to harness collective economic power, and we want to contribute what little power we hold, to call for the end to the suffering of the Palestinian people.

That’s why today – and every Thursday going forward – the Wellbeing Economy Alliance will be participating in the Global Strike for Palestine by:

  • Making no purchases or payments as an organisation
  • Ensuring that no financial transactions happen on our organisational bank accounts
  • Limiting our social media posts to promote the Strike and raise awareness of the situation in Palestine
  • Having our global team members participate in the Strike as individuals
