Welcome to Wellbeing Economy Alliance England

WEAll England works with people across the country to transform our economic system so that it puts the wellbeing of people and planet first.

We bring together academics, policymakers, campaign groups, and concerned organisations and individuals to unify their message, amplify their voice, and accelerate the adoption of wellbeing economy principles.

A ‘wellbeing economy’ is an economy designed to maximise wellbeing not profit. It goes beyond GDP to measure success by what really matters: quality of life, ecological health, and community resilience, leading to stronger local economies, a healthier environment, and happier lives.

WEAll England is the England hub of the Wellbeing Economy Alliance (WEAll), a global collaboration of thousands of people and organisations working towards wellbeing economies, including 80 local and regional governments around the world.

We built this economy and, together, we can build a better one. Find out more about our team and our work below – and sign up to join the movement in England for an economy that puts people and planet first.

The story so far

England is one of the principal architects of the kind of economy that focuses on competition, private ownership, and making as much money as possible. Here, the ideas of competitive individualism were shaped, alongside the legal structures of private property and limited liability, and the financial tools that enabled endless wealth accumulation.

This system helped us grow powerful, but has led to huge problems: extreme inequality, environmental breakdown, weakened democracy, and widespread harm to individual and societal wellbeing. The economic model that England helped to create and – by force – propagate around the world has exhausted its promise.

But England is also a place where new, better ideas are growing. Academics, policymakers, campaign groups, and other organisations have long been working on a different kind of economy, ‘wellbeing economies,’ which prioritise the wellbeing of people and planet instead of endlessly chasing growth. These groups are already testing new ways of doing things and building the tools needed to make real change.

Even though England doesn’t have a nationwide plan like Scotland or Wales, many wellbeing-focused projects are happening across the country. Examples include Cornwall’s decision-making wheel, Greater Manchester’s foundational economy fund, Doughnut Economics, cooperative business models, Preston’s work with local institutions, and the 1,000-plus B Corps in London. Together, they form a colourful mix of ideas and actions that support healthier communities and a healthier planet.

This decentralised activity reflects a uniquely English path – one built on local innovation, collaboration across institutions, strong civil society, and forward-looking business models that, together, can help restore social and environmental wellbeing.

Why now

All these efforts share common values: caring for people, protecting nature, involving communities in decisions, and thinking about future generations. But much of the time, they work separately rather than as a unified movement. Now they are becoming more powerful, it’s important to connect them, help them support each other, and work together so their impact grows. England is at a critical moment: by linking the people who are trying to transform the economic system, we can unify their voice and speed up the shift towards a wellbeing economy.

Our vision

Our vision is a connected network of support for an economy where the people and places of England are respected, cared for, and able to thrive.

What we do

Wellbeing Economy Alliance England (WEAll England) works with people across the country to transform our economic system so that it puts people and planet first. We:

Connect – We bring together people and organisations all over England who are working to create an economy that helps people and planet.

Unify – We look for what they have in common and help them speak with one strong, shared voice about changing the economy for the better.

Amplify – We spread that voice across the country so more people understand and support an economy that puts people and planet first.

Advocate – We explain the benefits of a wellbeing-focused economy to leaders and decision-makers, showing them how it can create real, positive change.

Support – we provide practical guidance and support to organisations looking to adopt wellbeing practices in how they think, plan, and work.
