What is the economy?
In short, economics is how we produce and mutually satisfy our needs. We often believe that economics is something given, fixed, and unchanging, but it isn’t. The laws, social norms, and histories that make up our economic system were created by people, and this means they can also be changed by people.
What is the Wellbeing Economy?
The Welfare Economy is based on the idea that the economy should serve people and the planet, not the other way around. In this system, laws, regulations, and incentives aim to provide quality of life and prosperity for all people, in harmony with the environment, from the outset. Instead of pursuing economic growth as an end in itself, and chasing it at any cost, the Welfare Economy puts the basic needs of people and the planet at the center, ensuring that their fulfillment is the highest priority.
How would be the world if we applied it?
In the society we envision, a country’s success is not measured by Gross Domestic Product (GDP) but by collective well-being. Key indicators shift to measuring these values, and the amount of money becomes a secondary factor that may (or may not) contribute to achieving other goals.:
Participation: Citizens participate in decision-making and are involved in their communities.
Nature: People are integrated into nature and give back as much as they take from it.
Dignity: Everyone has enough to live comfortably, safely, and happily.
Equity: Wealth is distributed fairly and everyone has the same opportunities to prosper.
Purpose: We all have a sense of belonging, and institutions serve the common good.
This implies a fundamental systemic shift. A good system is one in which laws and incentives are designed to ensure everyone has enough to live comfortably, safely, and happily. It’s one where people can unleash their creative energy to contribute to the flourishing of life on this planet. It’s one where we live in a restored, safe, and vibrant natural environment because we have learned to give as much as we receive. It’s one where everyone has a voice in shaping the destiny we collectively build, and feels a sense of belonging, meaning, and purpose through connection with others and with the planet that sustains us.
